Allergies Advice

Food Allergies and Hypersensitivity

Nearly all the food we purchase and consume can have traces of what has become known as the ‘Big Eight’ food allergens – These are Milk, Egg, Fish, Crustacean shellfish, Tree nuts, Wheat, Peanuts and Soybeans. The problem seems to stem from the mega-factories that process our food, tend to process many different foodstuffs on the same production lines and the potential for cross-contamination is huge. Especially as many of these factories operate in countries who’s food safety standards are not as rigorous as our own.

South Shore endeavours to use the best, freshest, local ingredients where possible, where not, local Supermarket produce is used, preferably from British producers with farm to fork trace-ability but still the risks are there. Please let us know of any allergies, especially nut allergies, before your arrival and we will do our best to minimise your exposure to these substances.

General Allergies and Sensitivity

“A staggering 44% of British adults now suffer from at least one allergy and the number of sufferers is on the rise, growing by around 2 million between 2008 and 2009 alone. Almost half (48%) of sufferers have more than one allergy…”
(Mintel, 2010)

Having suffered from hay fever since childhood I can understand how annoying and debilitating allergies can be. Here at South Shore we do our best combat the causes of allergies such as dust and pollen with a rigorous cleaning regime.

We also strive to let people know the risks of various allergens in line with latest guidance from the medical profession.

South Shore does not allow pets principally because so many people are now allergic to pet hair.

Fragrance/Perfume sensitivity

Fragrance sensitivity is either an irritation or an allergic reaction to some chemical, or combination of chemicals, in  many household products. Although perfumes are generally what come to mind when discussing fragrance sensitivity, fragrance is often added to a variety of daily use items such as toiletries, cosmetics, air fresheners and cleaning products.

Please be aware that South Shore Guest House uses air fresheners and many different types of cleaning products in all the rooms and throughout the guest house. If you believe you may be effected by these potential allergens, please contact us before your arrival to discuss with us if it is possible to minimise your exposure.
